Composite image of the 10,000 CryptoPunks, algorithmically generated and deployed on June 23, 2017, by Larva Labs under the v2 CryptoPunks contract on the Ethereum blockchain. The smart contract stored the SHA-256 hash of the PNG image containing all punks, arranged in a grid and served from an off-chain source (GitHub repository). Each punk is referenced by a token index (0-9999), starting at the top-left (ID 0) and proceeding left-to-right across each row, continuing row-by-row from top to bottom. Ownership is tracked live via on-chain mappings of ETH addresses (CryptoPunksMarket).
This NFT is a digital preservation of a publicly available image, created for archival, documentary, and educational purposes. Its creation and reconstruction from the Namecoin blockchain is intended in good faith to fall under the principles of fair use and/or the public domain, serving as a historical reference and commentary on a culturally notable concept of the algorithmic generation of minimalist 24x24 pixel graphics.
